Academics: Why GPA is a Made Up Number
Too many students (and parents) stress out about their GPA (grade point average).
What if I told you that this is random made-up number?
It's true!
UC Berkeley's minimum GPA is a 3.0 UC GPA correct?
Well, I recently helped a student with a 2.9 UC GPA get accepted into Berkeley (and a few other top UC & private campuses too).
How do you explain that?
Let me let you in on a little secret: the GPA number doesn't play as big of a role as you might think it does.
A GPA can be skewed to make you look good or bad depending on how you factor & calculate it.
Here's another secret: I have ZERO clue what most of my coaching student's GPAs are. And to make you scratch your head a bit more... only a small percentage (<10%) of my students have a 4.0 GPA.
But if what if I told you that my students consistently get into the top UC campuses, private schools and even Ivy League colleges every single year like clockwork?
It's because I don't look at GPA at all... *gasps*
Instead, I look at two other academic factors.
I'll share more about this tomorrow...
Test Prep Corner: Why Should I Take the SAT/ACT Even Though It's Test-Optional or Test-Blind for Some Schools?
For test-optional schools, a strong SAT/ACT score can help you increase your admission chances.
But what other purpose can these scores help with?
FREE MONEY... aka Scholarships!
Did you know that for some schools, as long as you have a certain score, you can earn a financial scholarship for the school?
Here are a few examples of some:
Auburn University: 26+ ACT score or 1230+ SAT; $4000 - 18,000 per year for four years for non-residents
Baylor University: 27+ ACT score or 1280+ SAT; $3,000 - $60,000 depending on the program
Columbia College: Certain GPA + Test Scores; Up to 100% off tuition
University of Southern California (USC): High academic achievement; Up to full tuition
