Academics: The Only Two Factors That Matter
Yesterday, I shared why GPA is just a random number that doesn't mean a lot by itself.
So what does?
There are only two (2) factors that matter. Two factors that I actively look out for & help encourage my students have on their Academics section.
The first factor? Academic rigor.
What is academic rigor? It is the ability to take as many challenging courses as possible.
This is important because colleges want to know if you're able to keep up with the academic rigor of the college once you get there. It's not going to get any easier. College academics is going to be harder. It's going to get much, much tougher. Colleges want to see if you are capable of performing well under this type of rigor.
And colleges can get a good guess based on your high school academics. If a student challenges themselves and takes as many honors-level courses or higher as possible, they are more likely to be able to keep up with the collegiate level of rigor at the college or university.
So what's the tip here? Take as many honors-level, Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or college-level (CL) courses as possible! This is how the colleges will see if you're going to be able to keep up with their rigor once you get there.
Pro-Tip: I ask my students to compare themselves to the top kid in their class. Not against GPA, but against their class load. I want my students to match or even beat the rigor of these top students. That's been one of the top strategies we've been able to utilize in terms of academics.
And the other factor? I'll share that tomorrow...

Test Prep Corner: What is the best SAT or ACT test date?
The best SAT date will depend on whatever time you will be able to commit to prepping seriously for at least one month straight. It will be well in time before school deadlines, so that you can retake the test, if necessary. It will likely NOT be when you have other tests such as finals or AP tests (in our experience, June is the month when students tend to score lower).
Since ACT test dates typically fall on different months than SAT dates, you can study for both the SAT and ACT back to back–given you have enough bandwidth to prep for two months straight. However, you can also streamline your studying by converting ACT and SAT practice test scores to see which you’re doing better on!
